Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

If you experience heartburn more than twice a week and still have symptoms that can't be cured with over-the-counter medications or prescription heartburn medicine, see your doctor. You may be suffering from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Other symptoms of GERD include a burning in the back of the throat, a bitter taste in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, or a choking sensation while you sleep. Reflux Disease is caused when a one-way valve near the top of the stomach becomes weakened and can no longer keep stomach acid from washing back into the esophagus and throat. This acid causes the burning sensation of heartburn.

Lifestyle changes and medication can relieve some causes of heartburn. However, if these treatments fail, surgery may be the answer. With today's new laparoscopic technique, your surgeon uses a small camera and his operating tools to repair the problem. The top of the stomach is wrapped around the esophagus, re-creating the valve that keeps stomach acid out of the esophagus. With this procedure, GERD can be relieved quickly and safely, giving you lasting relief from discomfort.
